Should you sniff after using neffy?

Short answer

No. The maker's instructions say to try to avoid sniffing during and after a neffy dose. If someone sniffs by accident, watch their symptoms for at least 5 minutes and give a second dose in the same nostril if they continue or get worse.

When adults give a child a nasal spray, they often say "sniff" without thinking. With neffy, the instructions say to try to avoid sniffing during and after the dose, and the Canadian product monograph says the same.

If someone does sniff by accident, the maker's instructions say to watch their symptoms for at least 5 minutes. If symptoms continue or get worse, give a second dose with a new neffy in the same nostril, if possible. Call 911 after the first dose either way.

The three things worth telling any helper are: don't test spray it, keep the nozzle straight and pointed toward the forehead, and don't sniff. Our guide to explaining neffy to a babysitter or teacher puts them into a five-minute briefing.
