How many epinephrine doses should I carry?
Short answer
Two. Guidelines recommend carrying two doses of epinephrine, because a second dose is sometimes needed. neffy's maker advises carrying at least two nasal sprays, and EpiPen is sold in pairs for the same reason.
A single dose doesn't always resolve a severe reaction, and symptoms can come back. That is why both makers' instructions describe a second dose after 5 minutes if symptoms don't improve or get worse, and why carrying two devices is the standard advice.
- neffy: the maker advises carrying at least two nasal sprays. A second dose goes in the same nostril, with a new device.
- EpiPen: sold as a 2-pack. A second dose uses a new auto-injector.
Two devices also protect you against the everyday problems: one left in the car, one that got too cold, one that expired last month. Keep both in date and in range, and keep them together so a helper finds both.
The ResQBand Thermal Pack fits two auto-injectors or a 2-pack of nasal spray. After any dose, call 911.
