Text message program: ResQBand emergency alerts

Western Allergy sends text messages from 1 866 283 6110 for one purpose: to alert the emergency contacts of a ResQBand card owner when their card is tapped. Contacts turn these alerts on themselves. Here is exactly how it works.

Who sends the messages

Western Allergy Services Ltd., Victoria BC, Hamilton ON, St. John's NL. ResQBand and this website are operated by Western Allergy. Messages are sent from our toll-free number 1 866 283 6110 and every message names Western Allergy.

How a contact opts in

  1. A ResQBand card owner registers their card at getresqband.com/activate and can list up to two emergency contacts by name and mobile number (contacts are optional). Western Allergy does not text those numbers. The owner receives a private invite link for each contact and sends it themselves, from their own phone or email.
  2. The invite page explains the alerts, names Western Allergy Services Ltd. as the sender, and shows a button that opens the contact's own messages app with JOIN and the card code ready to send to 1 866 283 6110. Next to the button it says: “By texting JOIN, you agree to receive ResQBand emergency alert texts from Western Allergy Services Ltd. at the number you text from: one confirmation now, then an alert only if Sam's card is tapped and the person helping presses the alert button, plus any updates that person sends about it. Message frequency varies and is usually zero. Message and data rates may apply. Reply STOP at any time to opt out, or HELP for help. Consent is not a condition of any purchase, and Sam's card works without it.” See a sample invite page.
  3. The contact opts in only by sending that JOIN text from their own phone. Nothing on the invite page turns alerts on by itself, so nobody can opt someone else in. Only a number the card owner listed can turn on that card's alerts.
  4. Alerts are optional and are never a condition of buying or registering anything. A contact who does nothing is never texted.

What enrolled contacts receive

One confirmation, in reply to their JOIN text:
“Western Allergy: you're signed up for ResQBand emergency alerts for Sam's card. We text only if the card is tapped in an emergency. Msg frequency varies. Msg&data rates may apply. Reply HELP for help, STOP to opt out.”

Then an alert only if the card is tapped and the person helping presses the alert button:
“Western Allergy ResQBand alert: someone tapped Sam Sharp's emergency card and may be helping them now. Note: Peanut and tree nut allergy. Location: near 1200 Douglas St, Victoria, BC V8W 2E7, https://maps.google.com/?q=48.43,-123.36 Call them or 911. Reply STOP to opt out.”

After an alert, the person helping can send short updates about the same emergency, for up to six hours:
“Western Allergy ResQBand update on Sam Sharp: Epinephrine given. In stable condition. Staff alerted. Note from the person helping: "At the front desk of the rec centre." Reply STOP to opt out.”

Message frequency varies and is normally zero; emergency alerts and updates are sent only in an emergency. Message and data rates may apply.

Opting out and getting help

Reply STOP to any message to opt out immediately. Reply HELP for help:
“Western Allergy ResQBand emergency alerts: you get a text only when a ResQBand card you joined is tapped in an emergency. Reply STOP to opt out. Help: 1 866 335 5294 or info@westernallergy.com.”

You can also contact us at info@westernallergy.com or 1 866 335 5294. A contact who opted out can text START to 1 866 283 6110 to turn alerts back on for the cards they had joined. Card owners can remove a contact at any time from their registration link.

Privacy

Contact names and mobile numbers are stored only to send these alerts and are never sold. No mobile information will be shared with third parties/affiliates for marketing/promotional purposes. Text messaging originator opt-in data and consent will not be shared with any third parties. We keep a record of each opt-in and opt-out, with the number and time, as proof of consent.
